What an arborist sees that you might not
These are the ones people are surprised by — and the reason a qualified opinion is worth having before you decide.
- Structural problems in the trunk or main leaders
- Bad crotches with included bark, or repeated cracks
- Cracks on the main trunk or main leaders
- The tree is simply too big for its location
- New construction — damage from equipment and ground disturbance. Consider removal before construction rather than after
- Major disease or insect infestation likely to kill it, or spread
- Interior decay
- Leaning in the wrong direction, or crowding among trees
Crowding — the one worth acting on early
Where trees have grown up too close together, the honest job is prioritising which are healthiest and worth keeping. Removing one properly chosen tree often saves the two beside it.
